pipe dreams

Josh proclaimed today that in no event will his children ever chew gum with sugar.

To which I replied, "what?! What about Bubblicious?"

And he said, "no, no, no, absolutely not. No gum with sugar in my house EVER."

Now my question is, should we laugh now or later?

For so many, many reasons, it's better that he say 'no gum with sugar in my house, ever' than SHOUT 'NO WIRE HANGERS...EVVVAHHH!!'

Ok, I am assuming it's because he wants all of those hard earned teeth your children will be making during their first year to stay put and not rot out of their heads, am I right? In that case, then juice must also go. Make sure he knows about the juice.

Granted I am not a mother (unless you count that pain in the ass beagle that calls our bed home)...however I am told that real "human parenting" has a funny way of mellowing people out for things "sugar" and tv...and alcohol during the week (for the parents, of course)...:*)

I am a fan of gum w/out sugar due to the fact that I am 25 years old and have no cavities. Never have, and hope to never obtain. My 4 year old nephew just started with the whole gum chewing business, and we have a bubble gum machine in our place for decoration, but it actually has gum balls in it (with sugar). Whenever he's in town, I always allow him to have 2 pennies for 2 gumballs. BUT, after chewing the gum, he HAS to brush his teeth. Does your hubby have any reasons as to why no gum with sugar??? At least let him explain himself.

You should laugh now AND later! My mom's a retired dental hygenist, I'm 33 and never had a cavity and I DID CHEW gum with sugar. I didn't chew gum often, it's just not my thing. Cricket is right about juice, if no gum with sugar, no juice either. My mom made us brush our teeth like crazy.

How did the girls weekend go? We need details.

You should laugh now and later--and not juist for the gum. I think the phrase "never say never" applies here...

Personally, I think you should just remember exactly how he looked/sounded when he said that, and then bring it into your head every time you feel the hormonal-tears coming on. That way you can laugh now, later, and forever! MUAH HA HA!

I know, I'm twisted. ;)

I say laugh now and again later -- when your kid has a wad of chewing gum (with sugar) the size of Texas in his/her mouth. Good intention, but hard to follow through with!!

Laugh now, laugh later. Laughter is a parenting tool that doesn't get nearly enough play in all those books about infancy.

And remember, you'll eventually find plenty of things to laugh about on your side!

Yeah... definitely laugh whenever. Just like I did when I said my son would never watch Barney.

Humor him now, laugh later ;-)

Just so ok, honey while you laugh on the inside. Then when your child has stuffed a huge wad of gum into his or her mouth, chews enough to sugar coat the teeth, swallows it, and asks for more - laugh at hime.

It's funny the things that seem important before the child is born.

Hah! Well, it's been my experience that what I don't provide for my own children (for example, we don't keep chips or soda in the house), he gets elsewhere.

All of those "nevers" will fly right out the wondow the first time your adorable baby will look at Josh, and say: "But, pwease, Daddy?!" and makes the goo-goo eyes at him! He'll be a puddle of Josh on the floor, and won't be able to hand the child that gum fast enough, I promise you.

Yeah, we also said "no" to a lot of things that went by the wayside VERY quickly. You'll be amazed at how quickly your standards will slip. It's just not all that earth-shatteringly important, you know?

And no children will ever wake up in the middle of the night, too, right?
